Neurobiofeedback allows the patient to become an active participant in his or her own treatment as opposed to the traditional administration of medication.  EEG neurofeedback can lead to improved self control, more effective concentration, and less acting out behavior.

EEG neurobiofeedback is a tool that helps the individual change levels of electrical activity in the brain.  It is a safe, painless procedure.  Small sensors are attached to the scalp using a gel to keep them in place.  Brain waves are monitored by means of a computer while being viewed by the patient on a display similar to a video game.

When information about a person's own brain wave characteristics is made available to him, he can learn to change them.  Research has shown that brain waves in individuals with ADD/ADHD contain excessive slow waves (theta) and not enough fast waves (beta) during activities requiring concentration.  Neurofeedback trains individuals with ADD/ADHD to increase beta waves and decrease theta waves.

The number of sessions required will vary with each individual.  Progress may be seen after 10 sessions.  However, one the brain learns to regulate itself, it continues to do so on an ongoing basis.

Before having an EEG, you should:

Allow 1 1/2 to 2 hours for you first appointment.
Allow 8 hours of sleep the night before.
Wash and dry your hair before the test.  Do not use gels, mousses, hair sprays, or conditioners after washing.  Do not put any pins, clips, or barrettes in your hair.
Dress comfortably.
Do not have any food or drink containing caffeine (Coke, chocolate, tea, or coffee).
Inform us of any medication you take.
